The london Accent , and the changing thereof
|
Dawned on me earlier whilst watching an interview with alan minter , that what i always use to associate as a London accent is pretty much on the way out ..
This was the interview
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3l5nmZ1ad00
I have a feeling in another generation time it will be completely gone, and replaced with the new london accent ..
this

So whats happened then ?

Interesting that modern English is based on East Midlands Middle English, as there was massive immigration from the East Midlands to the capital before and around the time that printing took off.
Thoink Chroist it wasn't the West Midlands...

There is some kind of vinegary fishy type sauce that a lot of West Africans have to drown their food in before they can eat it.
Definitely has to be an acquired taste, I can't stand the whiff of it. Anyone know what it's called? Maybe a brand name.
I keep meaning to ask one of the cleaners
"What the fuck is that shit?"
Fear that they may try to drag to a United Church of the Kingdom of God meeting before they will divulge the information that I seek.
Yes boss.

Me too, It was that or Sarf Lahndahn where I grew up. As for Welsh accents, South Wales is pretty grim but I went out with girl from a small village near Porthmadog and English was her second language - there's lovely.

I'm sure accents evolve hugely over the course of a century, multiculturalism has only increased that
I've not lived in London for fifteen years and noticed when I was back last that the rudegirls talk with and African twinge. Fifteen years ago it was Jamaican and Africans were taken the piss out of

RP is a bit sinister as accnt goes , as is not regional , but is acquired by the middle classes as a sign of upward mobility through elocution lessons ...
why would you bother ? unless you're from birmingham

There wasn't just one London accent. My Nan was born in Covent Garden in 1900. I used to take her back in the 1970's to visit the area which would always involve visiting pubs. She would listen to people in the pub and identify which part of London they were from. Whenever we asked them she was always right.
